For many of us, pets are family. When a dog or cat gets sick or injured, the last thing you want to worry about is whether you can afford the care they need.
That’s where pet insurance can help.
If you live in Washington or Oregon, there are pet insurance options available that can help reduce the financial impact of unexpected veterinary bills. Two companies worth knowing about are Fetch Pet Insurance and Kanguro Insurance.
Why Pet Insurance Matters
Vet care can become expensive very quickly. Emergency visits, surgeries, diagnostic testing, medications, dental treatment, and treatment for serious illnesses can easily add up to thousands of dollars.
Pet insurance is designed to reimburse you for eligible veterinary expenses after you meet the terms of your policy, including any deductible.
Having coverage can give you more freedom to focus on your pet’s care instead of worrying about the entire cost of an unexpected vet bill.
Fetch Pet Insurance in Washington and Oregon
Fetch offers pet insurance for dogs and cats in all 50 states, including Washington and Oregon. Policyholders can use any licensed veterinarian in the U.S. or Canada.
Fetch’s accident and illness coverage can reimburse up to 90% of eligible veterinary expenses, depending on the plan selected. It also includes coverage that many pet owners may not realize is available, including sick-visit exam fees, hereditary conditions, dental injury and disease, and certain behavioral treatment.
Some Fetch benefits may include:
- Accidents and illnesses
- Emergency veterinary care
- Surgeries
- Diagnostic testing
- Prescription medications
- Sick-visit exam fees
- Hereditary and breed-specific conditions
- Dental injury and disease
- Behavioral treatment
- Optional wellness coverage for routine and preventive care
Fetch also offers optional wellness coverage that can help reimburse certain routine services such as annual exams, vaccinations, and dental cleanings.
Kanguro Pet Insurance in Oregon
Kanguro currently offers pet insurance in Oregon, but its current state list does not include Washington state. Kanguro says its pet insurance is available in 27 states plus Washington, D.C., and it continues to expand into additional states.
Kanguro offers accident and illness coverage for dogs and cats and may reimburse up to 90% of eligible veterinary costs, depending on the selected plan. It also includes 24/7 TeleVet access with its plans.
Kanguro coverage may include:
- Accidents and injuries
- Illnesses
- Hospitalizations
- Surgeries
- Prescription medications
- Diagnostic testing
- Dental illness
- Hereditary and genetic conditions
- 24/7 TeleVet access
Kanguro also offers optional preventive-care add-ons for pet owners who want additional coverage for routine care.
Another feature that may be helpful for households with several pets is Kanguro’s multi-pet discount, which the company says can apply to up to five pets on one policy.
Fetch vs. Kanguro: Which Is Right for You?
The right choice depends on where you live, your pet’s age and breed, the coverage you want, your deductible, reimbursement percentage, and your budget.
If you live in Washington, Fetch is currently the option of these two that is available statewide.
If you live in Oregon, you may have the opportunity to compare both Fetch and Kanguro to see which policy better fits your pet and your budget.
What Pet Insurance Usually Does Not Cover
One of the most important things to understand is that pet insurance is generally designed for future accidents and illnesses.
Pre-existing conditions are commonly excluded. Fetch explains that conditions showing signs or symptoms before enrollment or during the applicable waiting period generally are not covered, subject to policy terms and certain exceptions. Kanguro also lists pre-existing conditions among its exclusions.
That’s one reason it can make sense to look at pet insurance while your pet is healthy rather than waiting until a major medical issue develops.
